Bolero

Bolero Dance Classes Toronto

The Bolero Latin ballroom dance, originally a Spanish dance in 3/4 time, was changed in Cuba initially into 2/4 time then eventually into 4/4. It is now present as a very slow type of Rumba rhythm. This is how our Bolero dance classes in Toronto are taught. The music in Toronto Bolero dance classes is frequently arranged with Spanish vocals and a subtle percussion effect, usually implemented with Conga or Bongos. If you’re looking for Bolero dance lessons in Toronto, Arthur Murray Dance Studio is the place to be!

The Bolero dance lessons are taught to a smooth, sophisticated, sentimental love dance. The emphasis is on smoothness and graceful turns with much communication between partners. The slower music to which it is performed, enhances a feeling of romance and combines controlled movement with dramatic expression of the music.

History of the Bolero

The Bolero has the same Afro-Cuban roots as the Rumba and is thought to have originated from Cuban or Spanish folk dances such as Danzon and Beguine.

Characteristics of the Bolero

The Bolero has some different characteristics from its Cuban relative the Rumba. Its long sweeping side steps and use of rise and fall create a softness that makes this dance unique among the Rhythm dances. The expanding and contracting dance position makes a very dramatic and romantic statement. Most new students to Toronto Bolero dance classes adapt quickly and enjoy the process of learning immensely.

Bolero Dance Music

When taking Toronto Bolero classes you’ll notice that while Rumba music is very rhythmical, the lyrical Bolero sounds more like a Latin Ballad.

Bolero songs and artists include:

  • Con Los Años Que Me Quedan , by Gloria Estefan
  • Perfidia, by Nat King Cole
  • Sin Excusas Ni Rodeos, by Julio Iglesias
  • From Here to Eternity, by Frank Sinatra
